KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 31, 2011) — Coalition forces conducted a precision airstrike against several insurgents, resulting in one local male being killed along with two armed insurgents being wounded in Pusht-e Rod district, Farah province yesterday.
Two armed insurgents were observed setting up two machine guns on an elevated rock outcropping. Shortly following the observation, numerous armed insurgents joined the original two armed insurgents at the rock outcropping. Intelligence reports indicate a Taliban leader was in the group.
Following the airstrike, a follow-on security force speaking with local villagers confirmed one local was killed in the airstrike and two armed insurgents were injured. At the time of the airstrike, the local national male was co-located with the group of armed insurgents while they were conducting insurgent activities.

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban facilitator along with three suspected insurgents during a security operation in Maiwand district, Kandahar province yesterday. The facilitator operated out of Maiwand district, and was responsible for moving supplies, conducting intelligence activities against Afghan and coalition forces and the dealing of narcotics in the local area. Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in the district and the leader along with three suspected insurgents was detained after initial questioning at the scene.
In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents in Musa Qal’ah district yesterday. After gaining positive identification, the enemy position was engaged with close air support, resulting in one insurgent being killed.
In Kandahar province, an ISAF dismounted patrol was engaged by insurgents with small arms fire in Panjwa’i district, yesterday. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces returned fire before detaining several insurgents.
In Helmand and Kandahar provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found several weapons and IED-making components and chemicals in Marjah and Arghandab, districts, yesterday. The caches consisted of pressure plates, remote-control devices, batteries, wire, jugs of ammonium nitrate and aluminum, a directional fragmentation charge and a small bag of aluminum powder.

ISAF confirmed a Taliban district shadow governor was detained during an Afghan and coalition operation in Takhar province Jan. 24. The shadow governor was responsible for leading insurgents in Yangi Qalah, Dashti Qalah and Darqad districts of Takhar province. He was closely associated with Hafiz, a Taliban leader for Darqab district who was killed during the operation.
The weapons and IED-making components and chemicals from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
