KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 29, 2011) – Five Afghan civilians were killed and four others wounded 9801during two separate insurgent attacks in southern Afghanistan today.

In Kandahar province, the deputy provincial governor was killed by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle in Kandahar City, while four other Afghan civilians were wounded in the same strike.

In Helmand province, four Afghan civilians were killed by an improvised explosive device blast in Nawah-ye Barakzai district.

Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces responded to the scene of both blasts to assist the wounded and investigate the incidents.

“We strongly condemn the insurgents’ barbaric killing of innocent people,” said German Army Brig. Gen. Reinhard Kuhn, ISAF Joint Command, chief current operations. “Our thoughts and concerns are with the families of the victims.”

Numerous insurgents were killed during separate clearing and security operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.

In Kunar province, an ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents with small-arms fire in Nari district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with mortar and artillery fire, killing one insurgent.

In the same province, an ISAF combat outpost declared an imminent threat on several armed insurgents moving toward a historical fighting location in Tsowkey district. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged with mortar fire, killing two insurgents and dispersing the others.

Also in Marawarah district, an ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents with small-arms fire. Coalition forces returned fire and called for air support. After gaining positive identification, an air weapons team supporting ground forces engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents.

In Kandahar province, an Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrol spotted several insurgents displaying hostile acts against coalition forces in Panjwa’i district. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged with small-arms fire, killing one insurgent.

A joint Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol observed several insurgents emplacing an IED in Sangin district, Helmand province. After establishing positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position with small-arms fire, killing two insurgents. Also today, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several caches in southern Afghanistan.

In Helmand and Kandahar provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found several weapons and IED-making components and chemicals in Marjah, Arghandab, Zharay, Nahr-e Saraj, Garm Ser and Nad’Ali districts. The caches consisted of 150 20 mm rounds, 26 82 mm mortar rounds, one mortar fuse, two rocket-propelled grenade fuses, four RPG warheads, one 40 mm smoke grenade, one 81 mm phosphorus grenade, three 107 mm rockets and four mines. The IED-making components and chemicals consisted of several IEDs, one directional fragmentation charge, 27 pressure plates, homemade explosives, ammonium nitrate, electrical components, nine main charges, two blasting caps and several remote-control devices.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons and IED-making components and chemicals from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed
