KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 21, 2011) — One Afghan child was killed and 12 others were wounded in two separate improvised explosive device attacks in southern and eastern Afghanistan, today.
In Zharay district, Kandahar province, Afghan civilians struck an IED resulting in one child killed and four Afghan civilians seriously wounded, including two children.
International Security Assistance Force responded to the scene of the explosion to assist the wounded. One 8-year old child was evacuated to an ISAF medical treatment facility in Kandahar province.
In Uruzgan Province eight Afghan civilians were wounded as a consequence of another IED attack in Deh Rawud district.
Afghan National Police responded to the scene of the blast to assist the wounded and look into the incident.
More than 10 insurgents were killed and detained by Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Afghan Forces during separate clearing and security operations in eastern and southern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.
In Laghman province, Afghan and ISAF security forces were engaged with small arms fire by numerous insurgents as they entered Mayl Valley to conduct clearing operations in Alisheng district. After gaining positive identification, combined forces called for air support. An air weapons team engaged the enemy position, killing more than 10 insurgents.
In Musa Qal’Ah district, Helmand province, an ISAF combat outpost was attacked with machine-gun fire by two insurgents. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with anti-armor missiles, killing one insurgent and dispersing the other.
In Kandahar province, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol stopped one motorcycle and detained two insurgents in Zharay district. The insurgents were carrying improvised explosive device-making components, including several pressure plates.
Also today, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered a large number of caches during separate clearing operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan.
In Kandahar and Helmand provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrols founds several weapons, narcotics and IED-making components caches in Daman, Sangin, Panjwa’I, Garm Ser and Zharay districts.
The weapons caches consisted of two AK-47s, 14 AK-47 magazines, four 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, one directional fragmentation charge, nine unknown grenades, five grenade fuses, 15 rocket-propelled grenades, one RPG warhead and 87 nitro-propellant sticks.
The IED-making components consisted of three IEDs, numerous electronic components, three chest racks, 30 pressure plates, 200 feet (60 meters) of electric wire, 340 pounds (154 kilograms) of shrapnel, 120 pounds (54 kg) of homemade explosives, one bag aluminium powder and two bags of unknown explosives.
The caches also contained a large quantity of drugs consisting of 1,100 pounds (500 kg) of hashish.
In Now Zad district, Helmand province, a National Directorate of Security patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of six RPGs and two 82 mm mortar rounds.
In Kapisa province, an Afghan National Army patrol discovered several weapons caches during clearing operations in Mahmud-e Raqi district. The caches consisted of one 100 mm anti-tank rocket, two 57 mm rockets, one 82 mm mortar round, one 90 mortar round, four initiators, one IED, three explosive charges, several 14.7 mm rounds, two full AK-47 magazines and loose 7.62 mm rounds.
An Afghan civilian tip led an ISAF patrol to an emplaced IED in Marjah district, Helmand province. Combined forces arrived on scene and retrieved the IED from the area.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, IED making components and chemicals from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
