Security forces have seen over the past month that insurgents are attempting to take sanctuary in religious and cultural building
such as mosques. “Afghan and coalition forces will not allow insurgents to take shelter in places of worship, especially after
they attacked a joint security force patrol, ” [in Ghazni] said Lt. Col. Patrick Hynes, International Security Assistance Force
Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
A Taliban improvised explosive device facility was destroyed by a coalition force air strike during a joint force deliberate clearing
operation in Kunduz province yesterday. Intelligence reports indicated the targeted location in the district was the possible staging
area for a Dec. 19, 2010 attack on the Afghan National Army recruiting center that killed six Afghan soldiers and wounded several others.
Two Afghan civilians were seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device triggered by insurgents in Kabul, Jan. 4. Afghan national
security forces responded on the scene of the blast to assist the wounded and to look into the insurgent attack.
The joint force discovered a weapons cache consisting of two rifles, five artillery shells, 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of hashish,
26 pounds (12 kg) of heroin, 44 pounds (20 kg) of opium and two grenades. Coalition forces also detained two suspected
insurgents related to the caches in Helmand and Kandahar Provinces.
Also, in Marjah District, Helmand province, an ISAF patrol discovered 150 pounds of poppy, six D cell batteries
and various pieces of metal.
Helmand Province
During a clearing operation, a combined patrol found a large weapons cache in Nad’Ali District, Helmand province. The cache consisted of 17 122 mm artillery
shells, two 100 mm artillery shells, five 76 mm artillery shells, one 82 mm recoilless rifle round, 61 82 mm mortar rounds, three 30 mm rounds, 19 rocket-propelled
grenade warheads, 183 various single action revolvers, 139 fuses. The cache also consisted of several explosives, four anti-personnel mines and three grenades.

In Musa Qal’ah District, Helmand province, an ISAF patrol spotted several insurgents emplacing an IED and called for air support. After gaining positive identification,
the air weapons team on scene engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents.

During a separate clearing operation, an ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents with small arms fire in Sangin District. After gaining positive identification,
coalition forces returned fire, killing two insurgents and wounding several others.

position with accurate artillery fire, killing several insurgents.
Zabul Province Afghan and coalition forces captured a suspected Taliban leader responsible for an improvised explosive device attack Dec. 24 that wounded four Afghan
civilians in Zabul province, during a security operation yesterday.
The detained Taliban leader operated primarily out of Kalakheyl village in Shah Joy District. He was associated with IED emplacement and attacks against
coalition forces along Highway 1. He also is responsible for the assassination of a Qalat Peace Council Member in November 2010.
Security forces followed leads to the target location in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before
conducting a search. After the area was secured, the security force conducted initial questioning at the scene before detaining the targeted leader
and two suspected insurgents.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation and the security force conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
Ghazni Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban weapons facilitator detaining one suspected insurgent and killing several armed insurgents during
a joint security operation in Ghazni province yesterday.
The Taliban weapons facilitator is involved in selling heavy machine guns, pistols and other weapons systems to the Taliban in Rashidan district.
He is also associated with two top Taliban leaders in the area.
Security forces followed leads to a compound in the district. As the security force arrived at the compound an armed insurgent ran from the
compound while two other armed insurgents engaged the security force resulting in one armed insurgent being killed.
The security force continued to the secure compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit before conducting a search of the
compound. As the security force began searching the compound an armed insurgent shot again at the security force resulting in the second
armed insurgent being killed.
After securing the immediate area, the security force moved to the compound where the armed insurgent had fled to. Again, Afghan forces
called for all occupants to exit before entering the compound. As the security force entered the compound, the armed insurgent shot at the force,
resulting in the armed insurgent being killed. The security force recovered multiple AK-47's, pistol and ammunition. One suspected insurgent
was detained after initial questioning.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.

operation in the Ghazni province.
The security force received intelligence tips that the two armed insurgents were hiding in a district mosque to avoid capture. Earlier in the day
the two armed insurgents were observed planting an improvised explosive device before conducting an attack on a joint security force that was
on patrol in the district.
The security force located the armed insurgents hiding in the mosque. After numerous attempts by Afghan forces to call the armed insurgents
out of the mosque, the Afghan force escalated their call out procedures before entering the building, resulting in the two armed insurgents being killed.
The security force recovered two AK-47's, a pistol, multiple improvised explosive devices, anti-personnel mines and ammunition.

six chest racks, 30 AK-47 full magazines, one 9 mm gun and 300 7.62 mm rounds.

The Haqqani Network facilitator is responsible for the movement of weapons and improvised explosive device material for the Haqqani Network in

of explosives, one vehicle, multiple command-wire IEDs and pressure-plates IEDs.

A Taliban improvised explosive device facility was destroyed by a coalition force air strike during a joint force deliberate clearing operation in
Kunduz province yesterday.
Afghan and coalition forces cleared numerous buildings suspected of insurgent activity, including safe havens and weapons caches in the Shinwari village.
The security force identified five buildings that housed numerous explosives, IED's and weapons. The security force found that the facilities
contained rockets, high-explosive artillery rounds, anti-personnel mines, 100 pounds of home-made explosives, 20 pounds of dynamite, rocket propelled
grenades, 400 heavy machine gun rounds, a heavy-weapons system mount and IED making material.
After determining there was no other option to render the facility safe, the security force called in a precision air strike on four of the buildings
to eliminate the threat and protect the local populace. Forces destroyed a fifth weapons cache near another building with a controlled detonation.
“Finding and removing such a large weapons facility is another example of the Afghan and coalition commitment to remove Taliban from local
villages where they threaten or carry out attacks against the people of Afghanistan,” said Lt. Col. Patrick Hynes, International Security Assistance
Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Joint forces will continue applying pressure to the Taliban until they are no longer
able to find safe havens in local villages.”
The security force is continuing their efforts to disrupt enemy safe havens, where Taliban leaders use villages throughout the area to conduct
perational planning and facilitate attacks in northern Afghanistan.
Intelligence reports indicated the targeted location in the district was the possible staging area for a Dec. 19, 2010 attack on the Afghan National

and killing numerous armed insurgents during an operation yesterday.
The targeted Taliban district leader plans and conducts attacks against coalition and Afghan National Security Forces. He is responsible for Taliban
resupply of weapons and recruitment of Taliban members and reportedly is involved in kidnappings. He also has close contacts with
other Taliban leaders in the area.
Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in Imam Sahib district. Before the security force could start to secure the
area, a group of armed insurgents shot at them. Security forces returned fire resulting in several insurgents being killed.
The security force secured the area as Afghan forces conducted the callout for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before conducting
a search. The security force was conducting the search when two other armed insurgents shot at the force,
resulting in both armed insurgents being killed. The security force recovered multiple weapons including a machine gun, AK-47's, grenades and chest racks.
After the compound was secure, several suspected insurgents were detained for their involvement in insurgent activities based
on information gathered during initial questioning at the scene.
The assault force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
Wardak Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader operating in the Sayyidabad district during a joint security operation in Wardak province yesterday.
The Taliban leader was responsible leading and fighting in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces within the district. His insurgent group is
responsible for the mid-December multiple attacks that destroyed a fuel truck and other vehicles. He has direct connections with other Taliban leaders in the province.
Security forces followed leads to a compound in the district where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully.
The security force conducted a search of the compound where the Taliban leader self-identified himself as the targeted insurgent before being detained.
The security force conducted this operation without firing their weapons and no women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
Nangarhar Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader along with two suspected insurgents during a joint security operation in Nangarhar province yesterday.
The targeted Taliban leader for Toto village has conducted assassinations of villagers that posed a threat to the security of Taliban operating in the area.
He also has conducted operations against coalition forces in the region. According to recent reporting he conducted an attack on the Hisarak district
center and stole an Afghan National Police vehicle.
The security force followed intelligence tips to the potential compound in Sherzad district. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the
compound peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the building. After the area was secure, the security force conducted
initial questioning at the scene before detaining the targeted Taliban leader along with suspected insurgents.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation and the security force conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
