War in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command. Operations are 9554reported
in the following provinces: Kunar, Logar, Wardak, Helmand, Baghlan, Nimroz, Ghazni, Khost, Kandahar and Zabul.

The International Security Assistance Force joins the Baghlan provincial authorities in condemning
today’s insurgent attack on civilians in a Chacha Salngi District mosque.
ISAF patrols found several caches during separate clearing operations in eastern and southern
Afghanistan thus reducing weapons available for use against Afghan and Coalition forces.
Several Taliban leaders were detained including one responsible for kidnappings of Afghan civilians on
Highway 1 in Zabul province and an improvised explosive device facilitator who operates make that “use to” operate in Kandahar City.


Kunar Province
Two ISAF patrols were engaged by insurgents with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Watahpur District, Jan. 1.
After gaining positive identification, coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery fire and air support. Two nearby ISAF
combat outposts directed artillery and mortar fire and close air support engaged the insurgents’ position. The coordinated coalition
forces fire resulted in two insurgents killed.

Also…..
In the same province, after declaring an imminent threat against three insurgents moving into historical fighting positions in
Darah-ye Pech District, coalition forces engaged the enemy location with effective .50 caliber fire killing two insurgents.


Logar Province
In Mohammad Agah District, Musahi police found four BM12 rockets, seven anti-vehicle mines, one RPG, three boxes of
Dashka bullets, two boxes of mortar fuses, three hand grenades, three boxes of fuse wire, one battery, three pylons and
wood for preparing traps.

Afghan and coalition forces also discovered nine Russian grenades while conducting an operation.


Wardak Province
In Maidan Shahr District, Afghan National Army soldiers found 27 land mines and 25 detonators.


Helmand Province
In Garm Ser District, during a dismounted patrol, Afghan and coalition forces discovered an AK-47
with a magazine, one M-16 magazine, 50 RPK rounds, one rocket propelled grenade launcher with four rounds,
one Enfield 303 rifle, one cylinder with an unknown rocket inside, 100 60 mm mortar rounds, three sacks of artillery caps,
178 OB-9 recoilless rifle rounds, 3 Russian anti-personnel mines, 20 U.S. 7.62 links, 50 RPD rounds, 88 82 mm HE mortars,
178 OG-2 projectiles, 154 OG-15P mortars, one type-52 recoilless rifle round, one RPG-7, four PG-7 rounds, one RPD,
50 linked 7.62 x 39 mm RPD rounds.

Also…..
In Nahr-e Saraj District, ISAF soldiers found six RPG warheads and five unexploded ordinances.

Also…..
In Garm Ser District, ISAF members discovered eight 100 pound bags of ammonium nitrate and two rifles.


Baghlan Province
The International Security Assistance Force joins the Baghlan provincial authorities in condemning today’s
insurgent attack on civilians in a Chacha Salngi District mosque.

Two men entered the mosque and began shooting the praying civilians, murdering four and wounding two.

“We join the Baghlan authorities in anger over this despicable murder of innocent civilians. To gun down a group
of people in prayer is reprehensible,” said Rear Adm. Vic Beck, ISAF director of Public Affairs. “We offer our condolences
to the families who lost loved ones, and hope for a rapid recovery for the wounded. We will continue to work with the Afghan
government in bringing those responsible to justice.”


Nimroz Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader responsible for improvised explosive device attacks against coalition forces,
detaining two suspected insurgents during an operation in Nimroz province yesterday.

Forces conducted the operation in search of the Taliban leader in the Dilaram area of the province. He is also involved with the
facilitation of suicide bombers into Afghanistan and leads subordinate Taliban insurgents operating in the Gulistan and Bakwa
districts of Farah province.

Forces followed leads to the targeted compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully
before conducting a search of the compound. The two suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene.

Ghazni Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader for Muqer district, detaining several suspected insurgents
during a joint security operation.

The Taliban leader is involved with weapon facilitation and IED emplacement within the district. He was also involved with
the complex suicide attack in Kabul City on Dec. 19 that killed four Afghan National Army soldiers and wounded several
Afghan National Security Forces personnel.

Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in the district. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings
peacefully before conducting a search of the compound. Several suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning.




Khost Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader who operates in Logar province detaining several suspected
insurgents during a security operation yesterday.

The detained Taliban leader is based out of Pakistan where he distributes money, directs his subordinate Taliban leaders
and settles disputes among Taliban insurgents operating in Logar province. Recent reporting indicates he was requesting
information about the possible release of Taliban insurgents detained by Afghan and coalition forces in Logar province.

Security forces followed leads to the target location in Terayzai district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to
exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. Several suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning.


Kandahar Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban improvised explosive device facilitator who operates in Kandahar
City during a joint security operation in Kandahar province yesterday.

The Taliban facilitator was responsible for construction of IED's and coordinating IED attacks against Afghan and
coalition forces. He is known to have close contacts with other Taliban leaders in the area.

Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in Kandahar City. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit
the buildings peacefully before conducting a search of the buildings. The Taliban facilitator and numerous suspected
insurgents were detained after initial questioning.

No women or children were injured or detained during the operation and the security force conducted the
operation without firing their weapons.




Zabul Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader responsible for kidnappings of Afghan civilians on
Highway 1 during a joint security operation in Zabul province yesterday.

The Taliban leader is responsible for small arms and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and
coalition forces. He has direct connections with other Taliban leaders in the Tarnek wa Jaldak district.

Security forces followed leads to a compound in the district where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit
the buildings peacefully. The security force conducted a search of the compound where the Taliban leader
along with two suspected insurgents were detained.

Security forces have made it a priority to secure Highway 1 in an effort to further the safety of local Afghans
and coalition forces as well as provide a conduit to promote stabilization in the southern provinces.

This operation is one of a dozen conducted over a five-week period in the province. The major thoroughfare
extends from Kabul, near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, through the southern provinces and terminates
on the Iranian border.

No women or children were injured or detained during these operations
and the security force conducted these operations without firing their weapons.
