ASVAB tomorrow...

Hello AC,

I am set to take the ASVAB tomorrow. I am rather concerned about how I'll score.
I was wondering what the repercussions were of scoring inadequately, or even failing
(or under 31)
I live in Illinois, USA. I plan to join the Army (after a long mental dispute of Marines vs
the army). I suppose I simply want to know the significance of this test. I planned to be
an I.T (programmer) but I don't have the GPA for that (2.3), so I think now my 'true North'
would be infantry. I appreciate the feedback!

Where are you going to take the test? It's a placement/applied knowledge sort of test. (Dis)Qualifies you for certain jobs. Should be easy, go with your gut on questions you aren't familiar with/can't work out. Usually your initial answer that comes to mind is the right one.

Nice to meet you Jeff, I'm a Jeff as well who also took the ASVAB and I'm going into the Army as an 11X Infantry Recruit. What's important for you is to get a score above 31 because that's the Armed Forces Qualifcation score that pretty much seals your fate if you're going to enlist at all. If you happen to fail the test it's nothing to sweat over because the Army will allow you take the ASVAB again, only thing is a little studying doesn't hurt one bit especially if there's something on the test you're not sure of, in your case it's last minute but it'll still help if you need it.

Good luck on the test, don't worry yourself, you'll do fine and qualify for a job you want :)

Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial
award of MOS. Information technology specialist must
possess the following qualifications:
(1) A physical demands rating of very heavy.
(2) A physical profile of 212221.
(3) Normal color vision.
(4) Qualifying scores.
(a) A minimum score of 100 in aptitude area ST in Armed
Services Vocational aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests
administered prior to 2 January 2002.
(b) A minimum score of 96 in aptitude area ST on ASVAB
tests administered on and after 2 January 2002.
(c) A minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST on ASVAB
test administered on and after 1 July 2004.
(5) A security eligibility of SECRET is required for the
initial award and to maintain the MOS.
(6) A U.S. citizen.

I'm sure it looks like a whole bunch of crap but as most people don't know...the ASVAB isn't just one "score".
There's subsections to it such as GT, COMMO, ADMIN, COMBT....etc.. so, even if you're not able to get the job you want, you always have the chance to take the ASVAB over again. They do make study guides you can find online or in a book store.

its a much shorter test than the actual ASVAB, however, the questions will be roughly the same as far as style and idea. Take it and post your results...

scores? What happens after this, if I pass?

Say I past, I live close to a National Guard (Ottawa, Illinois) - what is the likelihood I'll be sent there?

Are you enlisting into Regular Army or Army National Guard? Because if you're in Regular Army they can station you anywhere in the country (or any permanent foreign duty station for that matter) If you're going into the Guard or Reserve they'll try to station you at a Guard or Reserve base about 50-100 miles from where you live. As far as the wait period for the ASVAB you might have to wait a few days from what I remember, probably 3 days since they have to process most paper work, etc. in that time frame.

scores? you should have studied...just kidding...dont worry it will be okay. it will take a couple of days for them to get back to you...remember there is more than just one person appling for the job.


congrats you are now eligable for some new jobs that few will ever hold...now with that being saaid you need to look over your options first before choosing a career.

-Jeff if you went to the gaurd very likely.....the guard and reserves can have soldiers upto 250 miles away...active duty say good by to your state.

It's rare as fuck to get stationed in your own state. You might get somewhere decently close though. You can take the ASVAB as many times as you want, but for data (IT, or w/e) I think you need to have a decently high score. It's a pretty intense course though, lots of tests and studying, at least from what I've heard from data Marines.

Went through MEPS today. Took the ASVAB and swore in/all the fun stuff. Finally enlisted.
