KABUL, Afghanistan (Dec. 1, 2010) – The Afghan National Police detained a man in Zabul province
after they found one metric ton (1,000 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate in the truck he was driving
yesterday.
The truck, coming from Pakistan, was stopped at a vehicle checkpoint when the large quantity of
chemicals, which are commonly used in improvised explosive devices, were found.
“This operation took a significant amount of bomb-making material off the streets,” said U.S. Army Col.
Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operation Center
director. “The Afghan security forces are to be commended for their diligence in this operation and
removing these deadly chemicals from insurgent hands.”
