‘I want killers to face justice’

Searching for clues at massacre site

BLOOD spattered the walls and debris still smouldered seven years ago when I witnessed the aftermath of the massacre.

A chill went down my spine as I realised the terror the Red Caps must have faced during their final moments. After choosing not to discharge their weapons into the crowd outside, they were probably trying to reason with their killers when they were mercilessly riddled with bullets. It was obvious the killers are well-known within the tight-knit community.

But the disgraceful hand-washing by a judge tells us the Iraqis have no desire to punish those responsible. There is now no hope of justice.

CHARGES dropped against Iraqis accused of the murders of six British military cops (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3173242/Red-Cap-murder-trial-dropped.html)

THE distraught dad of one of the six Red Caps massacred by an Iraqi mob yesterday demanded: "I want justice for my boy."

John Hyde, 62, blasted an Iraqi judge's decision to throw out charges against the two men accused of murdering his son Benjamin and five colleagues in 2003 because of lack of evidence.

He said: "I can't see any reason why the charges should have been dropped. The only reason I can think is that the trial judge is frightened of repercussions.
"I'm angry. Iraq has the death penalty so it should be used and these men brought to justice."
Lance Corporal Hyde, 23, Sergeant Simon Hamilton-Jewell, 41, Corporals Russell Aston, 30, Paul Long, 24, Simon Miller, 21, and Lance Corporal Tom Keys, 20, were killed when a 400-strong mob stormed a police station in Majar al-Kabir, southern Iraq.

A UK inquest delivered an unlawful killing verdict after hearing the military cops' bodies were riddled with bullets and had been beaten, dragged and tied up.
Arrest warrants were issued in Iraq for eight suspects. But only Hamza Hateer and Mussa Ismael al Fartusi were charged.
Iraq's Chief Justice Baleagh Hamdi Hikmat freed them yesterday after authorities failed to find a single witness who saw shots fired - despite questioning dozens of locals, including Iraqi police the Red Caps had been training.

A single witness said he saw Hateer taking a weapon from a dead soldier - but the court ruled he could only face theft charges.
The decision outraged the Red Caps' families. Cpl Miller's dad John said: "I'm devastated. I don't understand how this can happen."
Cpl Russell Aston's dad Mike said: "I've got to try to find some closure. I was hoping to get it from this case. But it's been denied me." The MoD said there were still seven active arrest warrants over the killings. Wuppy do that means jack shit ! ! R.I.P.
