AN eight-year-old American girl, kidnapped from her frontyard by a stranger, was returned to her mother alivel after a dramatic rescue by a quick-acting unemployed construction worker.
Victor Perez, 29, was in his living room, with his cousin, watching news reports about a little girl who had been kidnapped and forced into a car on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reporte.
An image of the vehicle, taken from surveillance cameras, flashed on the TV screen. Coincidentally, a little while later, Mr Perez saw the same car he had seen on TV making a T-turn in front of his Californian home.
In an instant, Mr Perez was in his 1988 Ford pickup, giving chase an pulled next to the man later identified as 24-year-old Gregorio Gonzalez and pretended to ask directions.
He did not see the little girl, but continued to follow Gonzalez, eventually forcing him off the road several times.
Gonzalez never stopped trying to escape until Mr Perez was able to pull his car in front of Gonzalez’s and bring him to a dead stop.
He finally pushed the little girl out the passenger side door and fled. According to Mr Perez, her first words to him were: "I'm scared."
Gonzalez was captured by California Highway Patrol 40 minutes later. Police say the little girl was sexually assaulted and was threatened with further physical harm.
Several neighbors who witnessed the kidnapping identified Gonzalez as the man who ran off with the girl. Gonzalez will be charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual assault.
