Two police officers were injured in the street bombing in Londonderry - and the Real IRA claims it carried out the blast.
The bomb, left in a Vauxhall Corsa on Culmore Road, went off an hour after a telephone warning by the terrorists late last night.
The injured officers suffered damage to their necks and ears.
According to reporters at the scene, the Ulster Bank and nearby Da Vinci's hotel and restaurant complex were worst hit in the blast.
A nursing home and houses in the area had already been evacuated before the explosion.
Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Martin_McGuinness) has accused the Real IRA of trying to drag the city back to its violent past and said he is disgusted by the attack.
Mr McGuinness is in Birmingham for the Conservative Party conference but refused to speculate if his attendance was the reason behind the blast.
He told Sky News: "I think it's irrelevant what it is to do with.
"We have seen over the course of recent times that there is still a tiny minority of people who believe that this sort of activity will advance their objectives.
"It is quite clear their objectives cannot be advanced and these deeds are totally futile."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has issued an appeal for information about the car, registration number IAZ 6015.
Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin said: "My appeal is for anyone who has seen that vehicle in recent days, and more specifically in the Culmore Road area last night to please come forward and speak to police."
Sky News' Vicki Hawthorne, at the scene, said: "There is quite an extensive security cordon around the bomb scene and we are being kept at quite a distance.
"This is a small complex, including a hotel, Ulster Bank and some other smaller shops. We are being told by the police that substantial damage has been caused to those buildings."

Two months ago a 200lb car bomb exploded outside a police station half a mile away in the city's Strand Road. Dissident republicans were also blamed for the explosion.
Police are warning of massive traffic disruption in the city because of the follow-up security explosion.
SDLP Mayor Colm Eastwood said he was disgusted by the attack.
He added: "I do not know what these people are hoping to achieve. They say they love their country but they spend time trying to destroy it.
"The people of this city will be very angry.
"It's shocking that someone would put a bomb anywhere, but especially at a commercial centre."
