A THIEVING treasurer who stole more than £53,000 from a charity which helps Britain's war heroes has been jailed for 18 months.
Mum-of-one Angela Knowles, 46, siphoned off the money while working for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.
Manchester Crown Court heard how she wrote out 82 cheques to herself over a four-year period to pay off debts.
Outraged Eddie Hancock, whose 19-year-old soldier son Jamie died while serving in Iraq, said after she was jailed: "I think she should get 20 lashes."
Furious Tory MP Philip Davies said: "This must be one of the most despicable things I've ever heard.
"To raid the coffers for personal gain like this is an absolute disgrace.
"It's right she should go to jail."
Knowles, of Hyde, near Manchester, admitted fraud and obtaining money by deception.
She has repaid £17,000 to the charity's Greater Manchester branch.
Bosses of the SSAFA vowed that no individual soldiers would suffer because of her crimes.
